Musk said SpaceX can cut gas-turbine lead times by 18 months

Elon Musk confirmed that SpaceX is building in-house capacity to cast gas-turbine blades and vanes. The Information had traced job listings and land purchases near SpaceX's Bastrop, Texas, site. Musk said SpaceX and Tesla are building solar capacity, but natural gas will still supplement it for several years. He claimed that SpaceX can bring turbines online up to 18 months sooner by casting the parts itself. TechCrunch reported that turbine suppliers are already booked for years as AI developers seek power outside the grid.

The 18-month figure is a company claim, not a measured production result. Casting large single-crystal turbine blades is difficult. Public evidence does not show that SpaceX has qualified a blade or delivered a power turbine. Faster gas deployment also carries a pollution cost. A Piedmont Environmental Council-commissioned study estimated $53 million to $99 million in annual health damages from one permitted Virginia data-center power system. That site is not SpaceX's project. The estimate also depends on a model of permitted emissions.

U.S. drone barriers collide with China's robotics scale

The United States imposed tariffs of 25% or 100% on many drones. It set lower rates for qualifying products from selected allies. The administration said the tariffs address national-security and supply-chain risks. TechCrunch reported that the FCC has also expanded restrictions to foreign-made advanced robotic devices. Counterpoint Research estimated that Chinese vendors supplied all five of the largest humanoid-robot brands by first-half shipments. Counterpoint also estimated that those Chinese vendors held 86% of the market covered by those leaders.

The security rationale comes from the administration that imposed the tariffs. Counterpoint's shipment figures are market-research estimates, not an official census. Much current demand comes from entertainment, research, and data production. That demand does not yet prove industrial replacement of human labor. Import limits can protect a market segment. They do not prove that U.S. suppliers can match Chinese volume, components, or price.

AI and robotics are driving China's IPO rebound

Public offerings and secondary listings in Hong Kong and Shanghai had raised more than $54 billion in 2026 through late August. That figure comes from LSEG data reported by AP. The total exceeded the two exchanges' total for all of 2025. It represented about 21% of global proceeds. China memory-chip maker CXMT raised more than $8.6 billion in July. Humanoid-robot maker Unitree listed in August. AP reported that Shein planned a $1.7 billion Hong Kong debut for Tuesday. Analysts said investor demand for AI and robotics powered much of the wider boom.

The $54 billion total covers all public offerings and secondary listings in Hong Kong and Shanghai, not only AI companies. Investor demand does not establish durable revenue, profit, or technical advantage. Unitree's shares had fallen more than 40% by Friday from their first-day peak, according to AP. Chip access, export controls, and high valuations can still change the outcome after a strong debut.

Public records show the worker injuries behind robotaxi testing

TechCrunch found more than two dozen injuries tied to sudden braking, swerving, or other autonomous behavior in 2024 and 2025 OSHA records. Transdev, which manages Waymo test drivers, reported 16 injuries across San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Phoenix. Zoox reported as many as eight injuries linked to hard braking. Reported outcomes included sprains, strains, whiplash, and workers spending days or months away from work.

The files do not measure every autonomous-vehicle injury. OSHA's public case-detail rules cover only specified industries and establishments with at least 100 employees. The 2026 cases will not appear until the next reporting cycle. Company responses said the incidents represent a small share of testing miles. The companies also said some hard braking is unavoidable. The records still show a labor cost that passenger-mile and driverless-ride metrics can miss.
